Abstract

This research aims to focus on category shifts with translations equivalence in the chapter Little Women only from the Little Women and Good Wives novel by Louisa May Alcott. This reserach used descriptive qualitative method. By using the translation shift theory of J.C. Catford as main theory and the translation equivalence theory by Eugine Nida. The results of this study prove that in this study there are changes in the structure shift in the form of sentences and phrases. There is a shift in word class from the form of phrases and words. There is a unit shift from the form of a phrase to a word or a clause to a word. And there is an intrasystem shift from plural to singular or from singular to plural. Translation shift mostly refers to dynamic equivalence because the translation shift is translated into the closest meaning and the translation is translated as natural as possible to ensure that the receiver may understand the source language and culture as a whole.
