Abstract

The title of this undergraduate thesis was "Analysis of Figurative Language Translation in Jean Webster's Novel Daddy-Long-Legs." It sought to describe the various figurative language forms present in the source and target texts using Geoffrey N. Leech's theory of figurative language, idiom by A. S. Hornby, Peter Newmark's translation methodology, and the Harianto Nababan translation quality model. Descriptive qualitative research was the methodology used in the data collection and analysis for both the original novels and their Indonesian translations. According to the 20 pieces of information, I've gathered, the author used 7 similes, 3 metaphors, 6 idioms, 3 metaphors, and 1 hyperbole. The translator used two approaches—literal translation and adaptation translation—with 11 instances for the literal translation method, 5 adaptation translation methods, and 5 communicative translation methods that are used to translate the figurative language. Three quality assessments were conducted at the same time: readability, acceptable, and accuracy. The highest values are 11 for accuracy, 13 for acceptability, and 14 for readability.
