Abstract

This research is attempted to focus on translation procedure in idiomatic expression from Obama’s speeches. This research analyzes about the types of translation procedure and idiomatic expression on three Obama speeches. In conducting this research, descriptive qualitative approach. In this research, I used Newmark’s theory for translation procedure, Hockett for idiomatic expression, and Nababan for translation quality. Based on the analysis, I found 58 data that contain idiomatic expressions which are divided into 5 types, English phrasal compound, abbreviation, slang, proper name, and figure of speech, based on the results, 58 data of idiomatic expressions are translated by translation procedure, they are literal translation, shift or transposition, reduction and expansion, modulation, transference, recognized translation, descriptive equivalent, cultural equivalent, and synonymy, through-translation, the most common is paraphrase. Finally the most common idiomatic expression found in the Obama’s speeches is English phrasal compound (40) which are frequently ranslated by paraphrase. Here, the translator is indicated that enable to translate the source text to target text accurately, with the average score, accuracy 3, acceptability 3, dan readability 3.
