Abstract

The title of this undergraduate thesis was “Translation Analysis of Phrasal Verbs in The Children’s Novel Entitled The Magic Finger by Roald Dahl”. This research focuses on the analysis of Strategies of Translating Phrasal Verbs in The Magic Finger Novel into its translation. The method of research belongs to descriptive qualitative. The source of data is from The Magic Finger novel by Roald Dahl which is published by Puffin Book Publisher in 2016 (the 13 edition) and its translation in Indonesian which is translated by Listiana Srisanti and published by Gramedia Pustaka Utama in 2002 as the target text. The strategies are identified according to Mona Baker’s strategies (1992). The strategies are translation by more general word, translation by more neutral/ less expressive word, translation by cultural substitution, translation using a loan word or loan word plus explanation, translation by paraphrasing using related words, translation by paraphrasing using unrelated words, and translation by omission. There are 30 data of phrasal verbs found in the novel. The highest number is a strategy of translation by a more general word with 18 (60.00%). The second strategy is the translation by a more neutral/less expressive word with 6 (20.00 %). The third strategy is the translation by paraphrase using unrelated word with 4 (13.33%), and the last is the translation by omission with 2 (6.67 %). When analyzing the quality of accuracy, acceptability, and readability in translating phrasal verbs in the novel, the overall score is 2.97. The score indicates that the novel is contained in a decent translation.
