Abstract

This study investigates the negative politeness strategies employed by Roz, the main character in the film The Wild Robot, through a pragmatic analysis based on Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory. The study aims to identify and describe the types and frequency of negative politeness sub-strategies used by Roz, and to analyze which strategy dominates and the reasons behind its predominance within various social interactions depicted in the film. A qualitative approach was applied to analyze 58 utterances of negative politeness, supported by theoretical concepts of face-threatening acts (FTAs) and pragmatic communication theory. The findings reveal that Roz predominantly uses “using questions and hedges” (26 utterances, 44.83%) and “being conventionally indirect” (19 utterances, 32.76%) as her main strategies to minimize imposition and respect interlocutors’ autonomy. Less frequent strategies included apologizing, minimizing imposition, expressing pessimism, and giving deference, while four sub-strategies, such as impersonalization and nominalization, were entirely absent. These linguistic patterns reflect Roz’s adaptive and pragmatic communication style as she skillfully navigates complex social relationships and face needs. This study contributes significantly to the understanding of negative politeness within media discourse and highlights how varied linguistic politeness strategies interplay with character development and social integration in diverse narrative contexts.
