Abstract

This research aims to identify the functions of swear words and the subtitling strategies used in the Indonesian translation of the film A Man Called Otto. The study employs a qualitative method by collecting and analyzing the English and Indonesian subtitles of the film. The classification of swear word functions is based on Wajnryb’s theory, while Gottlieb’s theory is applied to identify the subtitling strategies. A total of 48 data of swear words were found in the film’s subtitles. The results show that abusive swearing is the most dominant function with 28 data, mostly translated using the transfer strategy (11 data). Cathartic swearing appears in 12 data, mostly translated using the transfer strategy (6 data). Social swearing is the least frequent with 8 data, mostly translated using the paraphrase strategy and the condensation strategy (3 data each). he findings also indicate that transfer was the most frequently used strategy because many swear words in the source language have similar meanings in Indonesian, making transfer the most effective way to preserve the original meaning and intensity. The findings also reveal that many swear words in the Indonesian subtitles were softened or omitted, which may be influenced by cultural sensitivity or censorship regulations.
