Abstract

This study analyzes narrative focalization in Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint (ORV) by comparing the source language (SL; English) and target language (TL; Indonesian) texts. Employing a qualitative method, this study uses Gérard Genette’s theory of focalization, Mieke Bal’s narratological insights, and Peter Newmark’s translation procedures for analysis. The data comprise 75 matched excerpts from SL and TL that exhibit various focalization types and corresponding translation procedures such as modulation, transposition, through-translation, reduction, and cultural equivalence. With internal focalization is the most frequent, alongside modulation being the dominant translation procedure to maintain clarity and narrative text. The study emphasizes the importance of understanding focalization types during translation to maintain the original story’s perspective and meaning. This contributes to better translation practices by highlighting how translators’ choices impact the narrative experience across languages.
