Abstract

Padina and Sargasum (Phaeophyta), Hypnea and Acanthopara (Rhodophyta), and Caulerpa (Chloroplryta) were macroalgae which were found in Paniis Beach -Bonten Province. Macroalgae are marine natural resources which contain various biological active compounds and could be used as medicine. The research aims were to investigate the toxicity ffict of methanolic extract of five macroalgae which collected from Paniis Beach-Banlen, Indonesia. The toxicity effect of the macroalgae methanolic extract were determined by brine shrimp lethality test and the lethal concentration 50 (LCr). The concentration of the tested extracs were 0 ppm, 10 ppm, 100 ppm, 200 ppm, and 500 ppm. After 24 hour the total numbers of lethal brine shrimp were counted. Analysis of the data was performed by probit analysis to determine the lethal concentration to half of the test organisms (LCr). All extracts exhibited considerable general toxicity towards brine shrimps. The LCroconcentration of methanolic extract o,f S. cinerium, C. cupressoides, Padina spp., Hypnea spp. and A. muscoides were 12.02 ppm, 40.74 ppm, 52.48 ppm, 56.23 ppm and 93.33 pprn, respectively. These results indicate that methanolic extract of S. cinerium, C. cupressoides, Padina spp., Hypnea spp. and A. muscoides have got profound toxicity effict and may have potential use in medicine.
