Abstract
This study analyzes the influence of gender on the use of politeness maxims in Season 2 of the Netflix series "Anne with an E." Drawing on principles of pragmatics and politeness theory, specifically Leech's (1983) framework of politeness maxims and Sara Mills' (2003) theory on gender politeness, the research investigates how societal norms and gender roles impact linguistic behavior. The study identifies 60 instances of politeness maxims and politeness scales through qualitative dialogue analysis from two episodes. Male characters use the maxims of generosity more frequently, while female characters use the maxims of tact more often. Both genders commonly employ the cost-benefit scale. These findings shed light on gender-specific strategies for navigating social interactions within the series. The study enhances our comprehension of the interplay between gender and linguistic politeness, offering valuable perspectives on the communication dynamics within "Anne with an E." Keywords: Gender, Politeness Maxim, Politeness, Pragmatics.
