Abstract

This research paper focuses on the analysis type of irony and translation technique Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck Novel. The study examines of three types of irony and translation techniques. This analysis uses descriptive qualitative method. This researcher uses Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck Novel as the source of data. The data obtained comes from the main dialogue utterances which contain types of irony. The researcher found 50 data type of irony uttered in Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck Novel. The total of dramatic ironies is 18 data, situational irony is 18 data and verbal irony is 14 data which are classified into all types of irony. And the last object of study is translation technique, in this study researcher found seven translation technique used by character in Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck Novel: borrowing, adaptation, compensation, generalization, literal translation, amplification, and variation. Borrowing with total of 13 data, adaptation with of 12 data, compensation with of 6 data, generalization with of 8 data, literal translation with of 4 data, amplification with of 6 and variation with of 7 data. After doing identification, classification, and analysis, the conclusion is that irony words which are used in the novel are expressing the sadness, strong, love and etc within a dialogue. At the same time, this study aims to find the translator's ideology translating irony words Keywords : Type of irony words and technique translation
